The tapping block is simplicity itself. I hacked off about an inch of some
1-1/8" aluminum round I had lying around, faced off both ends and drilled
a hole which just clears my 10-32 tap. I couldn't believe how much easier
it was to tap holes using the tapping block.
The second thing I discovered was spiral flute taps, pictured at the bottom.
With these, the chips are pulled out of the hole rather than pushed into
the hole. The nice thing about the spiral flute version is that you don't
have to back up. You just keep cranking and cranking.
